Basic Policy on Blood Transfusion
Our hospital has a policy of relative non-blood transfusion.
We will respect the patient’s wishes and make efforts towards non-blood transfusion treatment;
however, if a situation arises where there is no other life-saving means besides blood transfusion,
we will perform a blood transfusion. Furthermore, in emergency situations where life is immediately at risk without a blood transfusion, we will prioritize saving life and perform a blood transfusion regardless of the consent of the patient and/or their family.
- We will not sign or seal documents (such as waivers) presented by patients who refuse blood transfusions for religious reasons.
- If consent for a blood transfusion cannot be obtained for elective surgeries, procedures, or treatments that require explanation of blood transfusion therapy and agreement to a consent form, we recommend transfer to a facility where such treatment is possible.
- In cases where multiple physicians determine that a blood transfusion is urgently required to save a life, a blood transfusion will be administered regardless of the wishes or consent of the patient and/or their family. (Rejection of absolute non-blood transfusion)
These policies apply regardless of the patient’s consciousness, their ability to make their own decisions, or whether they are an adult or a minor.
